Chapter 16: Voice Status
Record a short voice note for everyone, or leave one for a single person. Covers your status, your inbox, icons and when notes expire.
16.1 Record, play and delete your status
What is a voice status?
Voice Status is a short voice note you leave for your people. When someone opens your status, your note plays first, like a status audio. In the app it appears as My Status and Record a Status Note. It is a separate feature from Mitra.
Is Voice Status part of Mitra?
No. Voice Status uses the megaphone icon. Mitra is the star button for Relation Analysis and Diary (Chapter 15).
What is the difference between a status and a message to one person?
A status is your voice note for everyone in a list. A voice message is a note you leave for one specific person, and it goes into that person's inbox (16.4).
Where do I record my status?
Tap the megaphone icon in the top bar of the Samaj tab (for your Samaj) or the Contacts tab (for your contacts).
How do I record it?
Open your status screen and tap the large red mic to start. Tap it again to stop. The audio uploads and you see "Status updated". If you see "Upload failed", try again.
What if the microphone does not work?
Allow microphone permission for KuhuChat in your phone settings, then try again.
How do I play my own status?
Your status card shows its length and how long ago you recorded it. Tap play.
How do I change my status?
Record a new one. It replaces the old one in that same list.
How do I delete my status?
Tap the bin icon on the card and confirm. It is removed for everyone.
How long can a status be?
The app shows the length as minutes and seconds. I found no fixed limit, so keep it short.
Does it work offline?
No. It must upload to be heard.
16.2 Community status vs Contacts status
Why are there two statuses?
You can say different things to different people. The Community status is for your Samaj. The Contacts status is for your contacts.
Does recording one change the other?
No. Each list keeps its own status.
Which megaphone do I use?
The one on the Samaj tab for the Community status. The one on the Contacts tab for the Contacts status.
Is there a status on the Social tab?
No.
Can I use it before joining a Samaj?
You can use the Contacts status. The Community status needs a Samaj.
16.3 Hearing someone's status
How do I hear someone's status?
Tap the megaphone icon on their tile. Their status plays automatically when the screen opens, and you can replay it with the play button.
What does the number on the megaphone mean?
They have a status you have not heard yet.
Can I open the status of someone not on KuhuChat?
No. The icon is dimmed and tells you they are not on the app yet.
Can I open the status of someone I blocked, or who blocked me?
No. You will see a message that the person is blocked.
Do I know who listened to my status?
No. You see only the voice messages people leave for you (16.4).
How do I stop people hearing it?
Delete it (16.1). It also disappears by itself (16.7).
16.4 Leaving a voice message and your inbox
How do I leave a voice message for someone?
Open their status screen. Use the mic in the bar at the bottom, speak, then stop and send. The message goes to their inbox for that list (Samaj or Contacts).
Can I see what I sent?
Yes. Your own sent messages appear in "messages I sent" on that person's screen.
Can I change a message I sent?
Yes. Recording again replaces your earlier message to that person.
Can I delete one?
Yes. Both the person who sent it and the inbox owner can delete it. Deleting is permanent.
Where do I find my inbox?
On your own status screen, below your recording card.
Who sees my inbox?
Only you. A visitor sees only the messages they sent.
Is the Samaj inbox separate from the Contacts inbox?
Yes. Each list has its own inbox and its own badge.
16.5 Unread and listened
How do I know a message is new?
Unheard messages are shown first. When you play one, it is marked as heard and moves down.
Where is the badge?
On the Samaj or Contacts tab, counting unheard voice messages left for you in that list.
How does a badge clear?
Listen to the message. For another person's status, listen to that status.
16.6 Icons and tile order
Which icon is the voice status?
The megaphone (speaker-style) icon. It sits in the top bar of the Samaj and Contacts tabs for your own status, and on each tile for that person's status.
Why did a tile move to the top?
A person posted a new status or left you a message. The tile keeps its place once you have heard it.
Why did the number disappear?
You listened, the person deleted it, or it expired (16.7).
16.7 Expiry
Does a status last forever?
No. It is deleted automatically about 12 hours after you record it. The check runs every hour, so it can stay a little longer.
What about voice messages in an inbox?
They are deleted after 2 days.
Are expired recordings removed from storage?
Yes, the audio file is deleted too.
Can I get it back?
No. Record a new one.
