Chapter 24: Deleting Your Account
Everything about deleting your KuhuChat account: where to find the button, what is deleted and what is kept, what happens to your posts, chats and business, what to expect afterwards, signing up again, and what to do if something goes wrong.
24.1 Before you delete
Should I delete my account or just log out?
If you only want a break, log out (see 2.7). Logging out keeps everything, and you continue where you left off when you log in again with the same number. Delete your account only when you want your data removed. It cannot be undone.
Can I get my account back after deleting?
No. Deleting is permanent. If you sign up again with the same number, you get a new, empty account. Nothing from the old account comes back.
Is there anything I should save first?
Yes. Save what you want to keep before you delete: download photos and videos from the Gallery to your phone, and note down anything from your Diary. Your Diary threads, your own wall and your chats are deleted with the account.
What if I am a village admin?
Your admin seat is handed over to another member automatically. Your admin applications and votes are removed.
Does deleting remove the app from my phone?
No. Deleting removes your account and data. The KuhuChat app stays installed until you uninstall it yourself.
24.2 Where to find Delete Account
Where is the Delete Account button?
Open the three-dot menu at the top right of the Samaj, Contacts, Social or Business tab. The red Delete Account button is at the bottom of the menu, above Logout.
Is it also on My Profile?
Use the menu on the four main tabs. That is where the red button is.
Can I delete my account from a browser?
Yes. Open app.kuhuchat.com/delete-account, log in with your mobile number and OTP, and follow the same steps.
Can I ask KuhuChat to delete it for me?
Yes. Use the email option on the Delete account page of this website. We confirm it is you and delete the account within 30 days.
24.3 Step by step
What are the steps in the app?
- Open the three-dot menu and tap the red Delete Account button.
- Read the warnings on the screen.
- Decide whether to keep your posts, gallery photos and pins (see 24.4).
- Type DELETE in the box. The red button stays off until the word matches.
- Tap Permanently Delete Account.
Why do I have to type DELETE?
So that nobody deletes an account by accident. Deleting cannot be undone.
What do I see while it is deleting?
A progress indicator on the Delete Account screen. Keep the app open until it finishes. A very large account can take a few minutes.
What happens when it finishes?
The app clears the chats and contacts saved on your phone, signs you out and takes you back to the login screen. It also switches off the extra home-screen icons (see 24.9).
24.4 Your posts, gallery photos and pins
What happens to my posts, gallery photos and radar pins?
By default they are deleted. If you tick the box "Keep my posts, gallery photos and pins for my Samaj", they stay for your Samaj and show as "Deleted user", with no name, photo or phone number.
What if I do not tick the box?
Your gallery posts, your posts on other people's walls and your radar pins are deleted, with their photos, videos and voice notes.
Can I look at my pins before I decide?
Yes. Tap Review my pins on the delete screen. It opens My Pins, where you can delete some by hand first (see 8.10).
If I keep them, can I get them back later or edit them?
No. Kept posts and pins no longer belong to any account. You cannot edit or remove them afterwards, and a new account on the same number is not linked to them.
Do kept posts still expire?
Yes. Gallery posts and wall posts still expire on their normal schedule (see 23.3). Radar pins do not expire.
Is my own wall kept if I tick the box?
No. Your own wall and your Diary threads are always deleted.
24.5 What is deleted
What is deleted when I delete my account?
- Your profile, login, reminders, trips, Mitra data and contacts.
- Your family tree entries, matrimony profile, admin applications and votes.
- Your group memberships. A group is deleted when its last member leaves.
- The messages you sent in group and Samaj chats.
- Your private one-to-one chats, for both people.
- Your own wall and your Diary threads.
- Your gallery posts, your posts on other walls and your radar pins, unless you chose to keep them.
- Your business in Business Hub, and your follows of other businesses.
- Your group hotel requests.
- The photos, videos and voice notes behind all of the above.
Is my login removed too?
Yes, last of all. If any step fails, your login stays so you can try again, and nothing is left half-finished.
What about my family tree entries that my relatives made about me?
Your own tree is deleted. Entries other people made about you in their trees are marked as removed, in the same way as when you remove a relation (see 5.4).
What about my matrimony interests?
Your matrimony profile and the interests you sent and received are deleted (see 6.12).
What about my Diary threads that I shared with others?
They are deleted. People you shared them with are notified that the thread was deleted (see 18.6).
Is my business deleted from the Business tab?
Your business profile and your follows are deleted. If your business was also listed in the nearby directory (Autofind), a listing may still show there for a while. Write to us from the Contact page if you want it checked.
24.6 What is kept
What does KuhuChat keep?
Hotel booking and payment records, because the law and accounting rules require it. KuhuChat also keeps one small log entry with no personal details, only a scrambled ID and dates, to show that the deletion happened.
Are my star ratings of other businesses deleted?
Not yet. Star ratings you gave to other businesses are not removed.
Do backups keep my data?
Copies in backups are removed as the backups expire. See the Privacy policy.
Are copies that other people made removed?
No. Photos or messages that other people saved, forwarded or screenshotted belong to them and are not removed.
24.7 Chats and other people
What happens to my chats with other people?
Private one-to-one chats are deleted for both of you. The other person no longer sees the conversation.
Why are private chats deleted for both people?
Your number may be given to a new person one day. Deleting the chat for both of you makes sure the new owner can never open your old conversation.
What happens to my messages in groups?
The messages you sent in group and Samaj chats are deleted. You are removed from every group. A group is deleted when its last member leaves, and an admin role is passed on to another member.
Will other people still see my name saved in their phone?
Possibly. A contact name that someone saved in their own phone book is theirs. KuhuChat cannot change it.
Will the last message in someone's chat list still show my text?
It can stay in their chat list preview until they get a newer message.
Will other people be told that I deleted my account?
There is no notice to your contacts. Your chats and your tile simply disappear for them.
24.8 Signing up again
Can I sign up again with the same number?
Yes. Log in with the same number and OTP. You see the "What's your name?" screen, like any new user.
What do I get when I sign up again?
A brand new, empty account. There is no family tree, business, groups, chats, wall or Diary, and you must join your Samaj again.
Will my old posts that I chose to keep come back to me?
No. They stay as "Deleted user" and are not linked to your new account.
What if my number is given to someone else later?
The new owner sees none of your data. Everything KuhuChat keeps no longer points to your number or name.
24.9 Home-screen icons and your phone
What happens to the extra home-screen icons?
KuhuTools, KuhuBiz Search and KuhuTrip are switched off at the end of the delete, after you are signed out. Some phones take a few seconds to remove an icon.
Does the main KuhuChat icon go away?
No. The main app icon stays until you uninstall the app.
I signed up again and the icons are gone.
Switch them on again from the three-dot menu, Home screen icons (see 2.10).
Does deleting clear my phone as well?
Yes. The chats and contacts saved on your phone, the outbox and your nearby-business alerts are cleared as part of deleting.
24.10 If something goes wrong
I see "Could not finish" or "Deletion is already running".
Your login is removed last, so nothing is lost if a step fails. Open the app, log in again if asked, and tap Permanently Delete Account again. If you see "already running", wait a few minutes and try once more.
It is taking a long time.
A very large account can take several minutes. Keep the app open. If it seems stuck, close the app, open it again and tap delete again. It continues where it stopped.
I am back on the login screen. Was my account deleted?
Yes. After a successful delete the app always returns to the login screen. If you log in with the same number and see "What's your name?", the old account is gone.
I logged in again and my old data is still there.
The delete did not finish. Open Delete Account again and repeat the steps. If it keeps failing, write to us from the Contact page with the phone number on your account.
Part of my data still shows for other people.
Kept posts show as "Deleted user". A business listing may stay in the nearby directory for a while (see 24.5). Contact us if anything else still shows your name or number.
24.11 Your data rights
Can I delete my data without deleting my account?
You can delete parts yourself: your posts, pins, Diary threads, chats, reminders and trips, your matrimony profile (6.12) and your business (14.2). Deleting the account removes everything together.
Where can I read about how long you keep data?
In the Privacy policy, linked from the footer of this website, and in Chapter 23.
Who do I contact about my data?
Use the Contact page on kuhuchat.com, or email hiren@kuhuchat.com.
