Chapter 11: Location Sharing

Send your current location or share live location for 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours, stop sharing, and fix common location problems.

11.1 Share your current location

What does "Send Current Location" do?

It sends one map pin of exactly where you are right now into the chat. The pin stays where it was sent. It does not follow you if you move. If you want the other person to see you move, use Live Location (11.2).

Where do I find it?

Open any chat, tap the attach button next to the message box, and tap Location. A sheet called Share Location opens.

Which chats support it?

Private chats, group chats and your Samaj chat all use the same Share Location sheet.

How do I send my current location?
  1. Open the chat and tap the attach button.
  2. Tap Location.
  3. Wait for the small map to show your position.
  4. Tap Send Current Location ("Share where you are right now").

The pin appears in the chat as a map picture with the word Location.

What is the small map at the top of the sheet?

A preview of where KuhuChat thinks you are. It is a picture only. You cannot move the pin or search on it. If the position looks wrong, close the sheet and open it again.

The sheet says "Could not get location". What do I do?

Tap Retry. If it keeps failing:

  • Turn on your phone's location (GPS) from the quick settings.
  • Allow KuhuChat to use your location when asked. If you refused earlier, open your phone's Settings, then Apps, then KuhuChat, then Permissions, and allow Location.
  • Move to a place with a better signal, for example near a window or outdoors.
How accurate is the pin?

KuhuChat asks your phone for high accuracy and waits up to about 10 seconds. If your phone cannot get a fresh reading in that time, it uses the last position it knew. Indoors the pin can be off by several metres. Wait a few seconds before sending if accuracy matters.

Does the pin expire?

No. A shared current location stays in the chat like any other message. Delete it like a normal message if you no longer want it there.

What happens when the other person taps my pin?

It opens in their phone's maps app, so they can see the place and start directions.

Can I send a location to several chats at once?

Not from the Share Location sheet. Send it in one chat, then forward the message if you need it elsewhere.

Will the other person get a notification?

Yes. They see your name with "📍 Location". In the chat list, the last message shows Location.

Does sending a location cost anything?

No. KuhuChat does not charge for it. The map picture needs an internet connection to load.

11.2 Live location

What is Live Location?

It shares your position as you move, so the people in a chat can follow you on a map. It is useful when you are travelling, meeting someone, or want family to know you have arrived safely.

How long can I share for?

You choose one of three options: 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours. Sharing stops by itself when the time runs out. You cannot choose "until I turn it off".

How do I start sharing my live location?
  1. Open the chat, tap the attach button and tap Location.
  2. Under LIVE LOCATION, tap Share for 15 minutes, Share for 1 hour or Share for 8 hours.
  3. A confirmation appears with the duration. Tap Share Location to start, or Cancel.
  4. Allow location access if your phone asks. For live sharing, choose the option that allows location all the time, so it keeps working when KuhuChat is in the background.

A live-location card then appears in the chat.

Why am I asked to confirm every time?

Sharing your live position is sensitive, so KuhuChat asks each time, even if your phone has already given permission.

How often does the position update?

About every 30 seconds.

What do the other people see?

A map card in the chat with a red LIVE dot and a line such as "Sharing for 12 min" or "Sharing for 1h". Tapping the card opens the Live Location screen (see 11.4).

Can I share my live location in a group or the Samaj chat?

Yes. Everyone who can read that chat can see it. Choose carefully before sharing in a large group.

Can two people share at the same time?

Yes. When the other person taps your live card, they can tap Share Location and share back for 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours. The map then shows both of you. The map shows two people at a time. If more than two people share in the same group, you see the person whose card you opened and one other.

Can I share live location in two chats at once?

No. You can share live in one chat at a time. If you start a new live share, your earlier one ends.

How do I stop sharing?

Either:

  • Tap Stop (red) on your own live card in the chat.
  • Open the card and tap Stop next to your name in the list of people sharing.

The card changes to Live Ended and your phone stops sending your position.

Can other people stop my live location?

No. Only you can stop your own sharing. Others can only close the map.

What happens when the time runs out?

Sharing ends automatically. The card shows Live Ended, and the sharing notification on your phone disappears. Nothing more is sent.

What if I delete the live-location message?

Sharing stops. Your phone checks about every 30 seconds, so it can take up to half a minute to end.

Will the other person get a notification?

Yes, the same as for any location: your name with "📍 Location". In the chat list the last message shows Live location.

Can the other person see where I was earlier?

The screen shows your latest position, not a trail of where you have been.

Why does it say "Waiting for GPS"?

Your phone has not yet got a position. This is common indoors or just after turning GPS on. It continues by itself as soon as a position is found. If it never does, step outside or check that location is switched on.

Does live location use a lot of battery or data?

Using GPS continuously uses extra battery, so choose the shortest duration you need. The data used is small.

11.3 Background location service

Will my location keep being shared if I close the app or switch to another app?

Yes, as long as you gave permission to use location all the time. Your phone shows a "Sharing live location" notification while it runs. Swiping KuhuChat away from recent apps does not stop it. Use Stop to end sharing yourself, or wait for the time to run out.

What does the "Sharing live location" notification show?

Its title is Sharing live location. Underneath it shows "Sharing with" and the person's name (or "your contact"), or "Waiting for GPS" while a position is being found. It is there so you always know your location is being shared. It cannot be switched off while you are sharing.

Do I need to give special permission?

Yes. On your first live share, your phone asks for location access. For sharing to keep going in the background, choose the option that allows location all the time. If you only allow while using the app, sharing may pause when you leave KuhuChat.

Sharing stopped by itself or looks frozen. Why?

Common reasons:

  • The time you picked ran out.
  • Location or GPS was switched off.
  • Your phone's battery saver or app-sleep setting stopped KuhuChat. Set KuhuChat to Unrestricted or Not optimised in battery settings.
  • The message was deleted.
  • You started a new live share in another chat, which ended this one.
Does KuhuChat track me when I am not sharing?

No. Your position is read only while a live share is active. When it ends, the background service stops and the notification goes away.

Is my location saved after sharing ends?

The live card stays in the chat as Live Ended, and nothing further is sent. Delete the message to remove it from the chat.

11.4 Map previews and the Live Location screen

How do map previews work?

The small map in the Share Location sheet and in chat cards is a map picture loaded from KuhuChat's own map service. It needs internet. If the picture cannot load, you see a grey box with a map icon. Tapping the card still opens the full location.

What can I do on the Live Location screen?

Tap a live card to open it. You get:

  • A full interactive map. Move, zoom, rotate and tilt it.
  • A map-type button at the top right that switches between road map and satellite view.
  • Tap the map to make it full screen. Tap the small collapse button at the top left to go back.
  • A list of the people sharing, showing each name with the time left ("Sharing for 20 min") or Live Ended.
  • A Share Location button, shown if you are not already sharing, so you can share back (15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours).
  • An Open in Maps button when the other person's position is known. It opens your phone's Google Maps app for turn-by-turn directions to them. It is free.
Why does it say Tap to expand on the live card?

It tells you the card opens a bigger map with more options when tapped.

The other person's pin is not moving.

Their phone has not sent a new position. Possible reasons are no signal, GPS off, phone switched off, or their sharing has ended. Check whether the card says Live Ended. Updates arrive about every 30 seconds when their phone is working normally.

I tapped Open in Maps and nothing happened.

You may not have a maps app installed. You will see "Could not open Google Maps". Install or update Google Maps and try again.

Who can see my location in a chat?

Only the people in that chat. If you shared in a group or the Samaj chat, everyone in it can see. Check the chat name before you tap Share Location.

Is location sharing safe?

It is your choice every time, and you can stop it at any moment. Share live location only with people you trust, choose the shortest time you need, and stop sharing once you have arrived. Anyone in the chat can copy or screenshot a map pin you send.
